Smart Integrated Mining Systems (SIMS) is a significant step towards Digital Mining but what is SIMS?
Fundamentally a SIMS is:
- The collection of time-stamped geospatial data extracted from any part of the mining value chain
- The contextualization of measurements and observations on (strategic) KPIs
- The organization of data for business improvement and reporting
- The visualization of results through imagery and dashboards for situational awareness
- The processing of data using predictive, dynamic tools like numerical modelling
- The automation of alerts for decision-making in the real world – when it matters!
Why do we need a SIMS?
As an industry, we already have:
- Large (paid for), siloed data sets that are mostly unused; and
- Alerts based on near real-time measurements that are checked against rules and tolerances
This is a good start, but we need to do more with the data we have, i.e.
- Integrate existing sensor systems with further integration of external (often free) data sources
- Generate risk alerts that come with suggestions for more informed responses
- Develop predictive business intelligence with KPIs summarized in visual dashboards
- Make decisions in a strategic setting against business KPIs
- Automate recommendations for managers so that they can continuously improve the business
